Is there an alternative to Windows, or What is Linux?

Microsoft’s share in the global software market remains huge. Ask your friends what operating system they use, and as a rule, they will name at least 95 percent Windows (unless, of course, your company consists entirely of hackers). The situation with server software is somewhat different, but we will not go into such wilds yet. Let’s talk about such an alternative system as Linux. GNU / Linux (as it is called by all rules) is a non-profit, freely distributed UNIX-like operating system developed as part of the GNU project and based on the Linux kernel. For brevity, the name has been reduced simply to Linux. Linux also often includes programs that complement this operating system, and applications that make it a full-featured multi-functional operating environment. Unlike Windows, Linux comes in a large number of distributions with a variety of names and a different set of “built-in” programs. The most famous of them are Slackware, Red Hat, Fedora, Mandriva, SuSE, Debian, Gentoo, Ubuntu. The history of Linux is branchy and confusing. It all started with the fact that Linus Torvalds, the Finnish programmer, having familiarized himself with the structure of the UNIX family systems, began to write his own kernel, adding more and more functions each time. In 1991, when Torvalds published the Linux kernel and attracted helpers, using the tools developed by the GNU project was an obvious choice. The emblem of Linux was the penguin – the personal mascot of Linus Torvalds. Currently, only about 2% of the Linux system kernel is written by Torvalds himself, because he attracted many volunteers from around the world to develop the system. Almost all Linux distributions (with the exception of the one that became commercial Red Hat’s) can be downloaded for free and legally purchased in the so-called. Linux User Group (“user groups” involved in the distribution and popularization of Linux) or order via the Internet (even mail delivery will cost you free). Therefore, at the moment, Linux is quickly conquering the market from commercial systems, penetrating both home PCs and laptops, mobile phones, not to mention servers where Linux has long been indispensable due to its security: unlike Windows, Linux with the correct configuration is almost It is not susceptible to viruses and is difficult to damage with hacker attacks. ₽ Free 14 day course! ₽ Free 14 day course! And now more about customization. No, the author in no way intends to torment you with technical details. There are many useful books for this, where each step is written clearly and in detail. I can only say that if there weren’t any “pitfalls”, then Linux would absolutely outperform all other systems in terms of distribution. But everywhere has its own nuances. Firstly, not everyone is able to install and configure Linux. Get ready that you will have to perform many operations manually: if Windows automatically detects any equipment and is full of prompts at the level of understanding of a 5-year-old child, then some Linux distributions lack such convenience. And with the proliferation of various devices such as card readers, digital cameras and other things, this can become a real problem. In addition, manually (from the command line) often have to prescribe some parameters. But in this way, you can configure the system completely to your needs, which is impossible to achieve with Microsoft Windows, limited in this regard. Problems may arise with the search and installation of some programs. Like it or not, but under Windows at this stage much more applications and games are written. The heated debate about which is better – Windows or Linux – do not subside on the Internet to this day. As for me, Linux is still able to attract an ordinary home user only with its free download (against the background of “predatory” prices for Windows distributions, this is a pretty weighty argument). Is it worth it to pay for it the next sleepless nights spent setting up the system – it’s up to everyone to decide. To many, on the contrary, it brings additional pleasure and deep moral satisfaction!
